Apex
Apex is an action-packed fantasy book filled with magic, monsters, myths, and “hounds.” The story held my attention and kept me rooting for the “good guys” to win. Joy, a Hunter, surrounded by her “hounds,” is forced to trust an “otherside” folk, Mage, and risk everything she has in order to save Apex. Joy is a strong female lead who relies on her instincts, her inner strength, and a few trusted friends to help her save the world. Building on the two previous books in the trilogy (which I haven’t read), the narrative is sometimes difficult to understand, but nonetheless it is an engaging and worthwhile read. The characters are flawed, memorable, and strong. I found myself rooting for Joy and her friends until its powerful conclusion. There is some romantic “action” that might add to the story but really isn’t necessary. The writing is strong and descriptive and moves the story along gracefully. I strongly recommend this book for anyone 13 and up. Overall, the book left me wanting to read more (even though this is the finale) and go back and learn the rest of the story. I look forward to reading more by this author.
