Allies & Assassins
When Archenland’s Prince Andrew is murdered, his Edling – his heir – and younger brother Jared must take the throne. But Jared isn’t ready for the pressure that is now put on him. His mother, his cousin, and his advisors all are scheming, all want Jared to do separate things. His only friend is Asta, a fiery red-head investigating his brother’s murder. Jared and Asta try to solve the mystery, but for every question they answer, ten more appear. Who is picking off the Royal Family? Who are they working for? Who will they kill next? Can they be caught before their next kill? Will Asta and Jared find the answers?
Intrigue and mystery are thick in Allies and Assassins. Characters are realistic and easy to empathize with. The setting is fantasy, but reminiscent of medieval Europe, in a time of chivalry and greed. It is interesting to see Jared be pulled in so many different directions, and the lengths to which people will go to gain power. Although dark things happen, the tone is not dark; it is suspenseful and I felt wrapped up in the story and invested in what happened to Jared in the end.
