/Alive/ is not your typical sick teen young adult story; instead, it’s a mixture of mystery and some paranormal elements added in. The beginning of the story starts off with Stella on her way to receiving a new heart, due to hers being diagnosed as no good. Once she gets a second chance shot at life, she starts having hallucinations, and she gets the feeling that someone is watching her. When the new boy, Levi, shows up to school, Stella is a little more than intrigued. In fact, she notices a pain in her chest that happens at the same time everyday, but goes away when she is near Levi. She becomes obsessed; ditching her friends, and becoming all about Levi. I didn’t like this. I hated the way Stella treated her friends, I felt that they were too good for her, and I kept wondering why they didn’t just forget about her.

The story was a bit slow to begin with and it felt like a contemporary, young adult novel. Then, it changed halfway through, into paranormal of sorts. I kept having theories of what was going on, and I was glad to see that I was right on some occasions.

Alive was an okay read for me, it’s one that only needs reading once. I do recommend it because I think the writing was good, but I just felt like the story lacked that wow factor I look for when I read. Plus, it doesn’t help when I can’t stand the main character. Overall, if you’re looking for a creepy book with a creepy element, then this is the book for you!
