A Thousand Pieces of You
Marguerite is not a typical teenager. She is the daughter of the two scientists that invented a machine called a Firebird that can transport people to different dimensions of the world. At the beginning of the novel, her father is murdered and the prime suspect is Paul Markov, a grad student that used to live in their house before he grabbed the Firebird and jumped to a different dimension. Now Marguerite and her friend Theo must chase her father’s killer and avenge his death.
A Thousand Pieces of You is absolutely a book that can be judged by its cover. For starters, the cover is stunning and is every bit relevant to the story. The characters are developed and complicated. The plot and setting could be confusing and complex but the author easily explains it. The entire story is gripping and never let me go from start to finish. Although the novel could easily focus on the futuristic part of the tale and glaze over the character growth, it doesn’t – instead, the characters are thoughtful and unpredictable, which is refreshing. A Thousand Pieces of You follows all the more recent trends of young adult fiction – computer hacking and a futuristic setting – but Claudia Gray puts her own unique twist on it that makes it entirely her own.
