Ticktock Banneker’s Clock
Benjamin Banneker borrowed a pocket watch from a friend and used it to see how he could make a clock. But he lived a long time ago, when it was very hard to get anything made out of metal. So he had to figure out how he could make it without metal. One day, while he was playing his wooden flute, he had an idea: right there in his hands was the material he could use for his clock! It was not easy, but finally he was able to make it and it worked for forty years!
This book has great pictures, and it is fun because you can think about how you would solve the problems like Benjamin did. You can think about how you would make a clock and what you would make it with if you couldn’t just look up instructions in a book or on the internet, and what you could use to make it. Benjamin worked really hard and kept trying until he was able to make what he wanted to, and reading about him makes you feel like you can do whatever you want to do, too, if you keep trying and are patient like he was.
