Clara is at the mall still mourning the loss of her sister, Lola. Absentmindedly, she unzips a purse pocket and finds in it a photograph and a letter asking for help. The letter and photograph were sent by someone named Yuming in China. Yuming claims she is trapped in a factory and forced to sew purses. She pleas for help and says she has no family to rescue her. Clara tells the authorities, but she just doesn’t think they will help. She decides she has to rescue Yuming on her own. Will Clara be able to convince her skeptical parents to go to China, or will Yuming have to find a way to get freedom herself?

This book is wonderful. I like that one chapter is from Clara’s point of view and the next is from Yuming’s. So Clara will be boarding a plane in one chapter, and Yuming will be sewing purses in another. This is a great book for kids ages ten and over. I would not read it to little kids because there are some things that might be scary for them, like kids trapped in a factory with little food. There were things that made me sad or squeamish, too, like her sister’s death and the vivid description of the illness. I like books that keep you entertained, but that are realistic, too. In this story, there are two real girls that don’t know each other, but they are connected somehow. I hope you like it!
