Those That Cause Fear
This is a book of Artic monsters There are polar bears and wolves bigger than my house – and lots of other stuff. People told these stories to the author.
The Amautalik has a basket for capturing children. A woman mated with a land sprite and had dog children. They are part children and part dogs. They are dangerous. They hunt lost travelers. How does a Palraijuq live in the arctic? Reptiles need warmth. The dirt gave birth to people called Earth Children. They aren’t dangerous. They are just children. Fish came from the man with his magic axe. There’s a fishing giant that hunts bowhead whales. She thinks they are little fish. Hills and mountains are sleeping giants. Amarujjuat are giant wolves. Nuliajuk’s father betrayed her after the rescue. I like her. She takes care of sea animals.
I loved this book. I like mythological monsters. There is a pronunciation page in the back to help with the monster names. My favorite name is “Earth Children.” I love the pictures – especially the ones with the animals. The illustrator tried to make the pictures as realistic as she could. This book is not really scary. The introduction might creep you out a little bit. People who like monsters and mythology will like this book.
