The Ugly Duckling
There is a mommy duck, and when her eggs hatch, all the babies are cute little yellow baby ducklings except for one, which has a huge gray head and huge blue feet and a bumpy blue bill. Instead of saying “quack,” this baby says “honk.” He trips and makes all the other ducklings muddy, and they are mean to him. Finally, all the ducks fly away and leave the ugly duckling, and it gets colder and colder through the winter. In the spring, a beautiful swan comes to his pond. He is afraid to come play because he thinks he is too ugly, but the swan tells him she doesn’t care what he looks like. And so when he comes out to play, he isn’t ugly at all. He is a beautiful swan, too.
This book is sad because everyone is so mean to the baby swan just because he doesn’t look like the others and act like the others. And then the mom was kind of nice, but then she ended up leaving him, too, which is really, really sad for that poor little swan. But I like the pictures because the animals are really cute even though they are really mean.
