This is a “history-book-that-you-can-participate-in” or a “you-choose” book. Instead of being a fictional story with characters and a plot, this book talks about the beginnings of space exploration. Come on in! The people in this story are historical figures who worked for the two super powers in space exploration: the United States and the Soviet Union. Some of these people include Werner Von Braun, Yuri Gagarin, and John F. Kennedy. You, the reader, get to play a role, too! You read about different events in space exploration history and make choices about how you will participate in history. Wonder what the next turn of the page will bring? I am a girl, and the chapter I really liked was called “Breaking into the Boys’ Club,” which talked about how women were able to get involved in the space program. One of the women who played a big part in the development of the space program was Jackie Cochran, a record-setting pilot. One thing about this book that I really liked was when the girls came into the story. I think that boys and girls ages five to nine who enjoy history would really like this book.
