Shadowsmith is a scary book about a boy named Kirby Simpson, who saves his town from the bad underworld. At the beginning of the book, there is a devastating storm in which Kirby’s mother gets badly injured and ends up in the hospital. Shortly after the storm, Kirby notices all kinds of creepy spiders around town. He meets the former Shadowsmith, Amelia Pigeon, who explains that the spiders are from the underworld and that they are watching him! Actually they are trying to kill him!

Later the two find out that Amelia’s awful brothers are behind it all and that they have opened a portal to the underworld! Many creatures escape, and Kirby and Amelia make a plan to defeat her brothers, Swift and Swan. After several battles, they figure out a way to close the portal and save the town! After all the creatures disappear, Kirby’s mother awakens from the coma!

This book was a little strange and difficult to read. I haven’t read much like it before, but some parts of it I really enjoyed! It’s not a book for everyone–definitely not if you are scared of spiders! If you are about ten years old and love creepy mysteries, you probably will like this book!
