My First Book of Hindi Words: An ABC Rhyming Book of Hindi Language and Indian Culture

This is an ABC book. For every letter, there’s a picture, a word, a really bad poem, and the word written in the Hindi script. I think “olay” (hailstones) is not a very useful word to know. The Indian flag is in the Y picture for “yatra” (journey). “X-mas” is a nothing word, not really Hindi or English. “Wah” means “wow.” I’ve had an ulta-pulta (topsy-turvy) day. R is for “rang” (colors). I play Holi every year. I don’t like the flying patang (kites) in India. People try to knock the other kites out of the sky.

These are not good words to help you talk in India. It would have been better if they used interesting words instead of English ABCs. They should have used the word for monkeys. I saw a lot of monkeys in India.

In the pictures, the sun is smiling and it has a bhindi (dot on its forehead). The mor (peacock) picture is my favorite. It’s a cute birdie. The sarak (road) picture looks realistic – especially the cows! The real India is even better than the drawings.

I don’t like this book because of the crude rhymes mostly. And whoever’s going to talk about hailstones?
