Last of the Sandwalkers
Lucy is a brave beetle scientist on a quest to discover life beyond the oasis where she lives. With her are her brother, her mother, Raef (a robot with a fondness for pranks), and the mysterious and supercilious Dr. Owens. Lucy has prepared against all the dangers of the desert. . .or so she thinks. After discovering a huge skeleton unlike any she has seen before, Lucy is betrayed by the evil Dr. Owens, who plans to use the finding for his own nefarious purposes. Lucy is jetted into a bizarre new world with strange new flora and fauna, where danger and wonder are always just around the corner. She will have to use all of her scientific training, will, and wits to get back home in time to stop Dr. Owens.
This book had a great blend of science and plot, and when tricky concepts were being explained, they were explained in such a manner as to leave no confusion for the reader. The plot was engaging and interesting, and the pictures were well drawn. This graphic novel format is a nice venue for exploring the ideas and for conveying them efficiently and in an entertaining way, making them accessible and interesting to all ages.
