The people of Protectorate leave a baby out in the woods once each year for the witch, who has never actually been seen. They believe that the witch will leave them alone and cause them no harm if a baby is left as an offering. Little do they know, the witch, Xan, is kind. She rescues each baby and brings them to the town on the other side of the woods where the baby can be adopted into a new family.

One year, Xan accidentally gives the baby amazing magic by feeding her moonlight. She decides that she must raise the baby, whom she calls Luna, because it is too dangerous to send her to a new family. Along with the help of Xan’s friends, Glerk, a swamp monster, and Fyrian, a tiny dragon, Luna is taught about magic and spells. Finally, when she reaches her thirteenth birthday, her magic starts to unwind and become very powerful. Will Luna survive a rumbling volcano, a man determined to kill the witch, deadly paper origami birds, and a woman with the Tiger’s heart?

I would give this book four stars. It was pretty interesting, especially if you like magic. Fyrian is definitely my favorite character. He’s so funny but has a huge heart. Overall, a great read.
