Between Two Worlds
Billy Bah, a sixteen-year-old Inuit girl, has met the Perry family before, when they took her to America for a year when she was a small child, so she recognizes an American ship when it sails into the bay. On the ship are Mrs. Perry and her daughter, Marie, who are looking for Lieutenant Perry. Billy Bah and her husband decide to go with them. Mrs. Perry is willing to sacrifice anything and everything to find her husband, and Billy Bah and her husband set out to rescue Perry before winter freezes them all.
I think the weirdest part about this book is that the Inuit husbands would trade their wives to other villagers for short periods of time. The wives didn’t have any choice about it. It was fascinating to see how the Inuit lived and see how exploring was done in the beginning of the twentieth century. Billy Bah had lots of struggles that she overcame well; she was interesting and I felt that I got to get to know her. This story is loosely based on real events and has several pictures of the real Billy Bah and the Perry family; the pictures are a wonderful addition to the story.
