Angus MacDream and The Roktopus Rogue

This unique, fantastical book is about Angus MacDream stopping Dirty Harry from taking over the world with his Dreamons (sounds like demons). They are like demons but they come from a dream world. None of the dreamons are the least bit humanoid, except for Dirty Harry. Instead, they have animal shapes like crabs, octopi, birds, koalas and frogs. On the Scottish island on which the story is set, the vale between the dream world and our world is very thin, so the dreamons can get through. Once every century, Dirty Harry gathers enough strength to come and invade earth. Dirty Harry is the main antagonist and the leader of the evil dreamons. Though the dreamons are for the most part peaceful, when Dirty Harry is invading, he brings his own dreamons that are much larger and very hostile. I’m not sure how he can create larger, more hostile dreamons, but he can. Angus MacDream, whose dad was assassinated after a previous battle with Dirty Harry, carries on his father’s legacy by fighting to stop Dirty Harry once again and send him back to the the dream world.

I really liked this book because I have never read anything like it. That’s saying a lot because I have read a lot of books. I liked the variety of monsters, and I thought it was funny that most of the monsters were covered with rocks. Even Angus thought it was pretty wild that he kept finding rocky monsters. Part way along the story, Angus befriends a baby sleepypotamus. I thought it was nice that Angus had a little animal companion. There are detailed pencil drawings of Angus and the dreamons throughout the book, so you know what the monsters look like, and it gives you that extra bit of immersion in the story. There is also a field guide in the back of the book with pictures and descriptions of all the dreamons.

I recommend this book for any tweens who like fantastical adventures, especially with unique creatures. It’s not like anything else you’ve read!
